<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><strong><u><span style="font-size: large"><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS">We are seeking volunteers for the following tasks:</span></span></u></strong></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS">***<u><em><strong>Laborers</strong></em></u> to keep the grounds cleared of debris. Three hour shift requested. One volunteer per shift.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS">***<u><em><strong>Shingle removers</strong></em></u>. We’ll supply the tools and harness instructions and supervision. A three hour shift is requested and we’ll be working in teams of three on the roof. </span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS">***<u><em><strong>Nail pullers</strong></em></u>. After shingles are removed there will be thousands of nails to pull in preparation for new roof installation. Simple skills and confidence on a roof are needed. Shifts start at 11am Saturday the 28<sup>th</sup> and continue thru Sunday. Harness and tools provided.</span></div>

<p>One final reminder about our  <strong>Sheet Mulch  EXTRAVAGANZA!</strong></p>
<p><strong><u><em>Saturday, February 13th,  from 9 am - 12 pm</em></u></strong></p>
<p>The Center for Local Self-Reliance is having it's first big soil-building project!  We will layer cardboard, compost and wood chips and begin creating the shape of the gardens. The project will be settled with a dose of sweet compost tea to kick start this biological transformation.</p>
<p>Please join us, <strong><em>Rain or Shine,</em></strong> at this most inspiring time of new beginnings! </p>
<p>*The Caretaker's House will be open and you can see our restoration progress!</p>
<p>* Learn about soil-building techniques!</p>

<p><strong>The Sat  Feb 13th Sheet Mulch Extravaganza</strong></p>
<div>The Center for Local Self-Reliance Invites you to join us Saturday February 13th, from 9 am -12 pm. The former Fairhaven Rose Garden is in the throws of a a fabulous re-invention, as perhaps you have noticed!</div>

<div>Together, we will gather for our first big soil building project. Great ingredients have been coordinated, and are landing. We will layer cardboard, compost and wood chips and begin creating the shape of the gardens. We will settle the whole project in with a dose of sweet compost tea to kick start this biological transformation.</div>

<div>Please join us at this most inspiring time of new beginnings. See the progress we have made on the house retrofit, and celebrate this exciting time with us. Pedal or walk in, or if you are driving please park in Fairhaven Park and walk over to join us. The Park Department has offered to bring piles of all the tools we need- so just bring your favorite gloves and your hearts and hands.</div>

That's how it's seemed so far for the Center for Local Self-Reliance…but thanks to our hard work the <i>NEW YEAR will bring big changes to the Caretakers House & Gardens!</i></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">- The Bellingham City Council and Parks Department have formally approved the community-designed site plan we put together this year (<a href="http://caretakershouse.org/stuff/design_charrette_sketches.html"><span style="text-decoration: underline ; color: #0020de">link to sketches</span></a>). </p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"> </p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">- Thanks to a Small and Simple Grant from the City of Bellingham, we have purchased deer-proofing fence material, and some soil amendments for the garden. </p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><b>Our successful fundraising efforts will enable us to get started with these projects:</b></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">- The house renovation is now underway and we're repairing windows, getting the utilities back on, and discovering the inherent beauty of this 90 year old house.</p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"> </p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">- Efforts to make soil improvements to the surrounding grounds will begin soon!  We still need to locate all of those interesting subterranean utilities that have serviced these grounds for all these years.</p>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%">Greetings Caretakers House & Gardens supporters,</span></b></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%">2009 has been a productive year for those of us at the <i>future</i> Center For Local Self Reliance. We appreciate your continued support and patience as we lay the foundation for this wonderful project.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%">We started off the year hosting a design charrette for the Caretaker’s House & Gardens in April and May. The resulting master site plan, designed by Dave Christensen, incorporated all the elements brought forward by our community dialogue. We spent the summer soliciting and responding to feedback from the city regarding our proposal, and in October we presented the results to the Parks Advisory Board and received their approval. Our next step is to make a presentation to Bellingham’s City Council on November 23. With their approval we can submit our building permit for Phase 1 improvements at the site.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%">Thanks to the dedicated efforts of many people we hosted a very successful Silent Auction & Party at the Leopold Ballroom on a beautiful September evening.   This event provided the needed funds (approximately $8000) for us to begin work on the house. Thanks for your financial support!</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%">We hope to offer some site-based programming in 2010 as we get underway with our projects. In the meantime we are sponsoring the following class which will be held at another location. Hope you can check it out.</span></div>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt">In this workshop you will find out which herbs to use and have on hand for the cold, wet winter months ahead. There are many herbs available to help you stay healthy when chills, coughing, and body aches come home from work and school. We will focus on preventative and specific herbs for symptoms as they arise. We will also learn which bitter, tonic, diaphoretic, and demulcent herbs to have on hand.</div>
